Senior Chief Zachary Summy is from Slatington, PA, and graduated from Northern Lehigh High School in 2003. He joined the U.S. Navy in June 2003 and completed recruit training at RTC Great Lakes, IL. After RTC Great Lakes, he attended Aviation Electronics Technician “A” School in Pensacola, FL.
Senior Chief Summy reported to Strike Fighter Squadron 201 (VFA-201) onboard Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth in March 2004. While at VFA-201, he was promoted to Third Class Petty Officer. After departing from VFA-201, he reported to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 84 (HSC-84) onboard Naval Station Norfolk, VA, in June 2007. During his tour at HSC-84, he was promoted to Second Class Petty Officer and deployed to Balad, Iraq, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Before leaving HSC-84, he was promoted to First Class Petty Officer and deployed a second time to Iraq.
After detaching from HSC-84, he transferred to Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 56 (VR-56) at Naval Air Station Oceana, VA, in July 2011. At VR-56, he served as the Avionics Leading Petty Officer and played a key role in the integration of the C-40A aircraft. He then served as the Maintenance Control Leading Petty Officer, earning recognition as the 2015 Sailor of the Year, and was promoted to Chief Petty Officer in 2016.
In October 2016, he reported to Commander, Navy Reserve Forces Command (CNRFC), onboard Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, VA, and served as the N7 Training LCPO. While with CNRFC, he helped revise the Prior Service Re-Enlistment Eligibility – Reserve program and established the first Reserve Force Sailor 360 program.
In November 2019, he reported to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 85 (HSC-85) onboard Naval Air Station North Island, CA. He served as the Maintenance Control Chief and deployed to Kadena AFB, Okinawa, Japan, in support of the Air Force 353d Special Operations Wing. In 2022, he was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer.
In November 2022, he transferred to Fleet Readiness Center Reserve Mid-West Detachment, Fort Worth, where he assumed the duties of Quality Assurance Supervisor. In December 2023, he was reassigned as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader and helped establish the Reserve Aviation Maintenance Center of Excellence to support C-130 Hercules Phase Maintenance, later becoming the
Command Senior Enlisted Leader of that command in December 2024. In March 2025, he was selected for conversion to Command Senior Chief and received follow-on orders to Reserve Talent Acquisition Group Southwest in San Diego, CA.
Senior Chief Summy’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards), as well as various service and campaign awards. He graduated from the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 266) and holds a Master of Science in Human Resource Leadership, a Master of Management in Organizational Leadership, and a Bachelor of Arts in Military Studies.
