Stephen B. Szalai

A native of Lynbrook, New York, Commander Stephen B. Szalai graduated from Boston University in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and earned his commission through the NROTC program.
Afloat, his assignments include Main Propulsion Officer onboard USS TORTUGA (LSD 46), Navigator onboard USS MICHAEL MURPHY (DDG 112), Staff Officer onboard Destroyer Squadron ONE, Chief Engineer onboard USS RUSSELL (DDG 59), Material and Logistics Officer (N4) onboard Destroyer Squadron TWO THREE, and Auxiliaries Officer onboard USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70).
Throughout his time at sea, Commander Szalai deployed seven times to the 3rd and 7th Fleet Area of Responsibilities and participated in various operations and exercises to include: CARAT, Cobra Gold, Balakitan, Winter Fury, Keen Edge, Talisman Saber, and Northern Edge.
Ashore, he served as J52 Country Director at U.S. Pacific Command. Additionally, he graduated from Anti-submarine/ Anti-surface Warfare Tactics Instructor (WTI) course of instruction.
Commander Szalai’s personal awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation and Achievement Medals as well as multiple unit and service awards.
Commander Szalai is married to Laura Szalai, with three children, Liana, Zoe, and Sienna.
