CMDCM(AW/SW/IW) Charles Hysell III was born in Clearwater, Florida, and began his naval career in June 1995 after graduating from Clearwater High School. Following recruit training at Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois; he attended Technical Core School, Fire Control “A” School and AN/SPS-48E “C” School.
His first assignment was aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65) from September 1997 to December 2001. While aboard, he completed 2 Mediterranean / Arabian Gulf Deployments in support of Operation Desert Fox and was the first ship off the Coast of Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks to commence Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). In January 2002, he reported to Fleet Training Center Norfolk serving as a 2M Micro-Miniature Electronic Repair instructor where he was promoted to the Rank of Chief Fire Controlman. In May 2005, he reported aboard the USS Oak Hill (LSD-51). While aboard USS Oak Hill, he completed a four-month anti-piracy surge and a six- and eight-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Gulf. He was also promoted to Senior Chief Fire Controlman on this tour.
In October 2008, he transferred to Afloat Training Group Norfolk where he served as the LCPO to the Air Warfare, Surface Warfare and Ballistic Missile Defense Office responsible for training and assessment of the ships in their basic phase. Upon completion of this tour, he attended the Air Force Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Academy in Montgomery, Alabama and was selected as an honor graduate.
In January 2012, He reported aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) in Norfolk, Virginia, where the crew took the ship out of RCOH Reactor and Complex Overhaul. Here he was promoted to Master Chief and lead Combat Systems Department through an arduous nine month around the world deployment in support of Operation Inherent Resolve ending in the first three-way carrier crew swap.
In December of 2015, he reported for a second tour at Afloat Training Group Norfolk as the Combat Systems DLCPO and the Strike Warfare Lead. He was selected for the Command Master Chief Program, which led to his early departure in January 2018.
In February 2018, he reported as the Command Master Chief to VFA-192, the World-Famous Golden Dragons, in the middle of a Western Pacific Deployment. The following year the command completed RIMPAC while sustaining as ready CAG. He reported to Naval Support Activity South Potomac in August 2020 where he had a successful tour as an installation CMC. He reported to his current command Navy Talent Acquisition Group Carolina in June 2022. His service awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards) and several unit and service awards.
