Commander Peter W. Dietz received a direct commission to the Navy Reserves in 2001 as a Chaplain Candidate and superseded to Active Duty in 2006. After completing Chaplain School in Newport, Rhode Island, Chaplain Dietz reported to Second Marine Division in Camp Lejeune, NC where he served as the Battalion Chaplain to Third Battalion Tenth Marines. While there he also served with the Second Combat Engineer Battalion. He deployed to Al Anbar Province, Iraq with Task Force Military Police in April 2008 in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and became a Fleet Marine Force Qualified Officer.
In 2009, Dietz reported to Commander Naval Surface Forces Atlantic, Ministry Center Mayport, FL. His underway time included Counter-Narcotic/Anti-Terrorism missions to Central and South America, Africa Partnership Station, NATO Anti-Piracy missions in the Indian Ocean, and a FIFTH FLEET deployment in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. He served in USS HUE CITY (CG 66), USS CARNEY (DDG 64), USS MCINERNEY (FFG 8), USS DEWERT (FFG 45), USS STEPHEN W. GROVES (FFG 29) and USS SIMPSON (FFG 56).
He transferred to U. S. Coast Guard Sector Key West in September 2012 as the Command Chaplain, which included three multi-mission Coast Guard Stations, five patrol boats, six Fast Response Cutters, and an Aids to Navigation Team. In 2015 Chaplain Dietz became the Deputy Command Chaplain of Naval Support Activity Naples Italy. He reported to Third Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Aircraft Group Eleven, in January 2019 as the Group Chaplain. He became the Director of CREDO, Naval District Washington in August 2021. He currently serves as the Director, Chaplain Accessions Programs at Navy Recruiting Command in Millington TN.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2), Navy Commendation Medal (3), Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (2), Iraq Campaign Medal, and several unit awards. He has a diploma from the Naval War College, a Bachelor’s Degree from Lehigh University, a Master of Arts and a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry from Candler School of Theology at Emory University.
