Commander William Marden was born in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania and commissioned through the Pennsylvania State University NROTC program in 2005.
Afloat, his career as a Surface Warfare Officer includes assignments on USS CROMMELIN (FFG 37), where he served as the Fire Control Officer; on USS UNDERWOOD (FFG 36) as the Damage Control Assistant; on USS STOCKDALE (DDG 106) as Weapons and then later Combat Systems Officer; as an operational planner with COMSEVENTHFLT and on USS MAKIN ISLAND (LHD 8) as Damage Control Assistant. He also completed an individual augmentation assignment, where he served as an Assistant Operations Officer with COMBINED JOINT INTERAGENCY TASK FORCE (CJIATF) 435 in Afghanistan.
Ashore, he served as the Training Officer and supported Damage Control inspections with COMNAVSURFLANT, Mayport Detachment and served a second operational planner tour at COMTHIRDFLT. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval War College with a Master of Arts in Defense and Strategic Studies degree, where he also completed the operational planner course through the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School (MAWS).
His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), and various campaign and sea service awards.
