Commander McCurry began his naval career in 1994 as a Fire Controlman. His first sea tour was as part of the plankowner crew onboard USS Milius (DDG 69), which conducted sea-trials, post-shakedown availability (PSA) and commissioning in 1996, as well as a middle-east deployment and support of Operation Infinite Reach. In 1998, he was selected for the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program, which enabled him to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relations from the University of Southern California (USC) and commission as a Surface Warfare Officer in 2003.

At sea, he served onboard USS Boxer (LHD 4) in San Diego, CA as the Main Propulsion (Aft) Division Officer, Assistant DCA/ER09 Division Officer and 1st/3rd Division Officer, completing two deployments to the Seventh and Fifth Fleet AORs in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and international exercise Talisman Sabre; Chief Engineer onboard USS Shoup (DDG 86), completing a dry-docking planned maintenance availability and deployment work ups; 1st Lieutenant onboard USS Essex (LHD 2), completing an extended dry-docking planned maintenance availability. Terminating shore duty a year early, he returned to sea as the Auxiliaries Officer onboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), completing refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) sea trials, pre-deployment work-ups and INSURV; and Executive Officer of USS Anchorage (LPD 23), completing a deployment to the Middle East and Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) operations.

CDR McCurry’s shore tours include duty under instruction at Duke University where he earned a Master of Business Administration degree, Instructor of Seamanship and Navigation at the US Naval Academy, and Battle Damage Repair Officer for MSC Far East/OIC of MSC Ship Support Unit Singapore.
