 Commander Ander S. Heiles, a native of Brooklyn, New York, graduated with merit from the United States Naval Academy in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography and was commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer.

He earned a Master of Science degree in Undersea Warfare and Oceanography from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2015, and a Master of Science in Joint Campaign Planning and Strategy from the Joint Advanced Warfighting School, part of the National Defense University, in 2025.

At sea, CDR Heiles served as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer aboard USS McCampbell (DDG 85), forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan; and as the Damage Control Assistant aboard USS Monterey (CG 61), deploying to the 6th Fleet AOR in support of the first planned European missile defense operation. He later served as Operations Officer and Plans and Tactics Officer aboard USS Shiloh (CG 67), also forward deployed in Yokosuka, Japan. He went on to serve as Operations Officer (N3) at Commander, Destroyer Squadron 31 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Selected for the Early Command Program, CDR Heiles commanded USS Monsoon (PC 4), homeported in Manama, Bahrain.

Ashore, he served as a Navigation and Shiphandling Instructor at the Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, Rhode Island. Most recently, he served as the Future Operations Officer (N5) at Naval Special Warfare Tactical Development Group, Squadron ONE, in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Commander Heiles’ personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and various unit and service awards.
