Master Chief Gwilt is a native of Grand Ledge, MI. He graduated from Grand Ledge High School in 2000 and enlisted in the Navy on July 27 of 2001. Upon completion of Recruit Training, Great Lakes, IL he attended Mineman “A” school in Ingleside, TX.
June of 2002, he reported to USS DEXTROUS (MCM 13) forward deployed in Manama, Bahrain. There he advanced to Petty Officer 3rd Class, earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare qualification, and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. October of 2004, he reported MCM CREW DOMINANT embarked on USS CHAMPION (MCM-4) in Ingleside, TX. There he advanced to Petty Officer 2nd Class and served as Deck Division Leading Petty Officer. July of 2006, he reported to NRD Michigan and served as a Recruiter at NRS Alpena, MI. There he advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class. May of 2009, he deployed with CRAM-7 JIB-2 to provide Counter Rocket and Mortar defense for Joint Base Balad in central Iraq.
April of 2010, he reported to LCS MCM DET-1, embarked on USS INDEPENDENCE (LCS-2). There he volunteered for an IA assignment to MCM CREW OLYMPIAN embarked on USS CHIEF (MCM-14) and USS DEXTROUS (MCM-13). On this IA, he advanced to Chief Petty Officer in 2013 and served as the Deck Division Leading Chief Petty Officer. In January of 2015, he reported to ATGWP DET-SASEBO in Sasebo, Japan. There he served as Mine Warfare Training Team Leader and advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer. In July of 2018, he reported to LCS CREW 112 and served as the Combat Systems DLCPO on USS INDIANAPOLIS (LCS 17). There he converted to Command Senior Chief and February of 2021, he transferred to USS WICHITA (LCS 13) to serve as the Senior Enlisted Leader. In July of 2023, he reported to Navy Talent Acquisition Group HEARTLAND in Detroit, MI to serve as the Command Master Chief.
Master Chief is a graduate from the Senior Enlisted Academy Class 229 (Purple), CMC/COB Class 226, and holds an Associate of Arts Degree from American Military University. He is proud to be part of teams that have earned the Combat Action, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and Navy Battle “E” ribbons. He currently lives in Howell, MI with his lovely wife, Angela Gwilt, their three children (Emma, Mason, and Ward), and three dogs (Ace, Dolly, and Millie).
