CDR Olson enlisted in the Navy in 1994 where after completing Recruit training and Fire Controlman “A” and “C” schools he reported for a five-year sea assignment aboard USS PORT ROYAL (CG 73). Upon completion of his first tour he reported to CINCPACFLT for a three-year tour under N4, conducting physical and electronic security. CDR Olson transferred as an FC1 for his second sea tour aboard USS DONALD COOK (DDG 75), where he was selected as Chief Petty Officer and served as CS DLCPO and CSMM and was commissioned in OCT 2005 as an Ordnance Limited Duty Officer.
After commissioning, CDR Olson transferred to Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command as a Computer Network Defense Watch Officer for two years. In 2006 he reported for duty as Systems Test Officer aboard USS BARRY (DDG 52). Upon completion of this tour, CDR Olson volunteered for a year-long GWOT support assignment in Iraq as Iraqi Correctional Officer OIC for six months and then as the NAVCENT Iraq Operations Officer for the remainder of the tour. After returning from the GSA in 2010, he reported to USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70) as the Systems Test Officer and Weapons Officer.
Selected for lateral conversion as a Surface Warfare Officer in 2013, he transferred to CSCS San Diego where he served as the Combat Systems Officer and IAMD and SSDS Team Lead. Upon completion of the Department Head pipeline training, CDR Olson served as Operations Officer onboard USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53) until APR 2016 and USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG 62) until JUN 2017. He then assumed Command of USS SHAMAL (PC 13) until OCT 2018. He then served as Operations Officer at Afloat Training Group Pacific Northwest where he completed a 14-month IA tour conducting United Nations Operations in Central African Republic. He currently is assigned as Executive Officer at Navy Talent Acquisition Group Heartland, Detroit MI.
His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (six awards), Army Commendation Medal, Naval Achievement Medal (six awards), Army Achievement Medal and numerous unit and campaign awards.
Commander Olson is a native of Crookston, Minnesota and a 2007 graduate of Excelsior College with a B.S. in Psychology.
