Master Chief Bernal, a native of El Paso, Texas, enlisted in the United States Navy in January 1994. Following completion of basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois he reported to Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois where he completed Engineman “A” school and followed by Engineman “C” school.
 
Upon graduation, he reported for duty onboard USS BRUNSWICK (ATS-3), Sasebo, Japan; and designated as a diesel mechanic. His fleet assignments includes:  USS FT MCHENRY (LSD-43), Sasebo, Japan; USS HERON (MHC-52), Ingleside, Texas; USS RAVEN (MHC-61 ), Bahrain; USS FALCON (MHC-59 ), Ingleside, Texas; USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (CVN-77), Norfolk, Virginia, USS MONTGOMERY (LCS-8) Gold Crew, San Diego, California and Naval Special Warfare Unit ONE, Guam. In addition, Master Chief Bernal completed shore assignments at Beachmaster Unit One, Port Operations, Sasebo, Japan; and two tours at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.
 
Master Chief Bernal is currently serving as the Command Master Chief onboard Navy Talent Acquisition Group San Antonio. He is currently taking classes for his Bachelor Degree in Human Resources at Ashford University.  Additionally, Master Chief Bernal graduated from the Senior Enlisted Academy Class 188 and the Command Master Chief/COB course. He has earned his Enlisted Surface, Aviation and Expeditionary Warfare designations.
 
His decorations include Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5 awards) and various unit and campaign awards.
