Commander Omar A. Garcia is a native of Eagle Pass, Texas. After graduating from Abilene High School in 1999, he enlisted in the Navy and attended Navy Boot Camp at Great Lakes, Illinois. His first tour was onboard USS IWO JIMA (LHD 7) as an Electronic Technician. He was selected for Seaman-to-Admiral 21 in 2004 and attended Prairie View A&M University. In December 2007, he graduated with a B.S. in Accounting and received his commission.
His sea tours have included Division Officer, Interior/Exterior Communications, Main Propulsion Aft Plant, and 2nd Deck Division onboard USS NASSAU (LHA 4); Weapons and Executive Officer, Patrol Coastal Crew BRAVO; Plans and Tactics Officer, USS SAN DIEGO (LPD 22); Operations Officer, USS MICHAEL MONSOOR (DDG 1001); and Material Officer (N4), Amphibious Squadron SEVEN – where he fleeted up to Operations Officer (N3). Most recently, CDR Garcia served as Executive Officer of USS MIGUEL KEITH (ESB 5) forward deployed to U.S. 7th Fleet and Indo-Asia-Pacific Area of Responsibility.
Ashore, Commander Garcia attended Texas A&M University earning a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering while serving as a Naval Science Instructor and Operations Officer for Texas A&M Naval ROTC. He served as Executive Officer for Assault Craft Unit FIVE (ACU-5) in Camp Pendleton, CA, and Executive Officer and Associate Professor of Naval Science at NROTC Unit, University of Florida.
Commander Garcia holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Prairie View A&M University and a Master of Engineering degree in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University.
Commander Garcia's personal decorations include Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (5 awards), and Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), as well as multiple unit and service awards.
