He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Miami University in Oxford, OH and was commissioned an Ensign through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps in 2006. He subsequently entered flight training and was designated as a Naval Aviator in April 2009.

CDR Joel Strong is a native of Topsham, ME.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Miami University in Oxford, OH and was commissioned an Ensign through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps in 2006.  He subsequently entered flight training and was designated as a Naval Aviator in April 2009.  He is a graduate of the US Army’s Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS earning a Master of Military Operational Studies and holds a Master of Science in Adult Education from Kansas State University. 

Operationally, CDR Strong was assigned to the “World Famous Bear Aces” of VAW-124 and served as Pilot Training Officer, Schedules Officer, Personnel Officer and Administrative Department Head.  During his initial fleet tour, he completed the maiden deployment of the USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH in 2011 supporting Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.  Following a transition to be a Training and Administration of the Reserves (TAR), he completed his Department Head assignment with the “Condors” of VR-64 serving as Assistant Maintenance Officer, Maintenance Officer and Operations Officer and flying the C-130T Hercules.  He completed numerous detachments and NALO missions around the globe supporting the Fleet Logistics Support Wing.

Ashore, CDR Strong served as an Advanced Flight Training Instructor at Training Squadron 22 in NAS Kingsville, flying the T-45C Goshawk and serving as Assistant Operations Officer, Assistant Naval Air Training and Operational Procedures Standardization (NATOPS) Instructor, and Carrier Qualification Detachment Coordinator.  Before arriving at NTAG San Antonio, he was assigned to U.S. Fleet Forces Command serving as the Maritime Operations Center (MOC) Training Officer. 

CDR Strong reported onboard Navy Talent Acquisition Group San Antonio in May 2023 to serve as Executive Officer. He has accumulated over 2,500 flight hours and over 175 carrier arrestments in multiple naval aircraft.  His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit, service, and campaign awards.
