Master Chief Navy Counselor Robert M. Gray enlisted in the Navy after graduating from St. Johnsville High school in St. Johnsville, NY. In October 1998, he reported to Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, IL. Upon graduation, he reported to Naval Aviation Technical Training Center (NATTC), Pensacola, FL. While assigned there, he completed aviation ordnance technician “A” school.


In March 1999, he reported to the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) in Norfolk VA where he was assigned as an ordnance technician in the flight deck division. During his tour on the Enterprise he completed two sea deployments, advanced from airmen apprentice to third class petty officer, and earned his Enlisted Aviation Warfare Qualification.


In 2002, he reported to Enlisted Navy Recruiting Orientation in Pensacola, FL for training and assignment as a recruiter with Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Buffalo, NY which later became NRD New England as part of the NRD realignment. During this tour he served as recruiter, recruiter-in-charge, and was selected for conversion into the career recruiting force in 2003. In 2007, he transferred from NRD New England to NRD Chicago. He was selected to chief petty officer and completed a zone supervisor assignment during his tour with NRD Chicago. In 2010, he reported to Navy Recruiting District Denver or assignment as a division LCPO, where he was selected to senior chief petty officer.


He checked onboard to NRD New York in September 2013 where he was assigned as the officer assistant chief recruiter. In June 2015, he began serving as the enlisted assistant chief recruiter. In September 2016, he reported to Navy Recruiting District Denver for assignment as the enlisted assistant chief recruiter. NCCM Gray transitioned NRD Denver to Navy Talent Acquisition Group Rocky Mountain, and assumed responsibilities as the chief recruiter in April 2019. In May 2019 he was selected to master chief petty officer.


Master Chief Gray has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in business management and economics from Colorado State University. His military decorations include: Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal (two awards) and various service and Campaign awards. He is also entitled to wear the Enlisted Aviation Warfare Insignia.
