Master Chief Smith, a native of Albany, Georgia, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February 2003, and after boot camp at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois he attended Seamanship Apprenticeship Training School in Great Lakes, Illinois. He is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy course 227.

Master Chief Smith, a native of Albany, Georgia, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February 2003, and after boot camp at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois he attended Seamanship Apprenticeship Training School in Great Lakes, Illinois.  He is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy course 227.

At sea he reported for duty as an Undesignated Seaman onboard USS Detroit (AOE-4) from June 2003 to February 2005.  Upon decommissioning he converted to Personnel Specialist. He served as Receipt Clerk at VP-40 Whidbey Island, WA 2005-2007; Leading Petty Officer USS George Washington (CVN73) Yokosuka, Japan 2012-2014; and CS Departmental Leading Chief Petty Officer USS Charleston (LCS 18) San Diego, CA 2021-2022. 

His shore assignments includes NSA Annapolis, MD (CSEL), Joint Staff Support Center (JSSC) (Navy Senior Enlisted Leader) Washington, DC (Pentagon); Personnel Specialist  PSD Gulfport, MS; IT Department Leading Petty Officer Naval Support Activity Charleston, SC; and Station Leading Chief Petty Officer Naval Recruiting District New Orleans.

His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals (8), and various unit, campaign, and service awards.
