Commander John R. Allen, a native of Maryland and third generation naval officer, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and a commission as an ensign in the United States Navy.
Following his commission, he reported to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida for flight school and completed his follow on training in May 2006 with the 562nd Flying Training Squadron at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where he received his “Wings of Gold” and designation as a Naval flight officer (NFO). In June 2006, Allen reported to the Take Charge and Move Out (TACAMO) E-6B Mercury Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma, where he completed his initial fleet training with the “Roughnecks” of Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron (FAIRECONRON) Seven (VQ-7).
Cmdr. Allen’s operational sea duty assignments include two tours with the “Shadows” of FAIRECONRON Four
(VQ-4) where he led numerous continental U.S. detachments in support of strategic nuclear deterrence, qualifying as an E-6B airborne communications officer (ACO), lead NATOPS instructor, combat systems officer (CSO), and mission commander evaluator. His first tour included serving as a joint battle staff mission commander flying in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) out of Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar. Allen’s second sea tour with VQ-4 included squadron department head duties serving as the training/NATOPS and
operations officer. His disassociated sea tour was aboard USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, as the assistant operations and administrative officer, qualifying as an officer of the deck underway and completing a nine-month operational cruise to the 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility. Allen’s shore duty assignments include two tours with the “Roughnecks” of VQ-7 as an FRS instructor, E-6B community NATOPS ACO evaluator, safety/NATOPS department head and E-6B assistant model manager. His joint tour assignment was to the United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) at Offutt AFB in Omaha, Nebraska, where he served in the Global Operations Directorate (J3) as the communications officer and airborne logistics planner on the Airborne Command Post (ABNCP) battle staff in support of the USSTRATCOM nuclear deterrence mission. There he was hand selected to serve as the executive assistant (EA) to the J3 Mobilization Assistant/Deputy Director for Joint Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations (JEMSO), and subsequently as EA to the Director of Global Operations (J3). In April 2020, Allen was selected for special missions command and shortly thereafter reported to Navy Talent Acquisition Group Northern Plains in Minneapolis, Minnesota for duty as the Executive Officer before becoming the Commanding Officer in June 2022.
Allen has amassed over 2,500 flight hours in 3 aircraft, including over 25 OIF combat missions. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal, and various Service and Unit awards.
