Commander Nick “Fester” O’Neill continues a legacy of naval service as a third-generation Sailor. He graduated from the University of Nevada in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and commissioned through Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, in December 2008. He earned his designation as a Naval Flight Officer in the P-3C Orion in 2010.

His operational assignments include service with the “Mad Foxes” of Patrol Squadron (VP) 5 in Jacksonville, FL, where he transitioned to the P-8A Poseidon; Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer and TOPCAT onboard USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN-76) in Yokosuka, Japan; and Department Head with the “Grey Knights” of VP 46 in Whidbey Island, WA, where he served as Maintenance Officer.

Ashore, CDR O’Neill’s assignments include Anti-Submarine Warfare Tactical Air Controller Division Officer at Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center in Point Loma, CA; Assistant Operations Officer at Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing ELEVEN in Jacksonville, FL; and Current Operations Director at Task Force 72 in Misawa,

Japan.

He assumed the role of Executive Officer for Navy Talent Acquisition Group Great Lakes in August 2025.

CDR O’Neill has accumulated over 1,500 flight hours in the P-3C and P-8A. His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit and service awards.

He is married to his high school sweet-heart, and together they have four children.
