A native of Sergeantsville, New Jersey, Commander B. C. Richards graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He lateral transferred into the Human Resources Community in 2013.
Afloat, Commander Richards completed his division officer tour aboard the fast attack submarine USS Scranton (SSN 756) as the Electrical Officer and Assistant Weapons Officer. During his sea tour he made two deployments, both to the Central Command Area of Responsibility in support of the Global War on Terrorism. He completed his Department Head Afloat tour serving as the Training Officer onboard USS George Washington (CVN 73) during its Refueling and Complex Overhaul from 2019 to 2021.
Ashore, Commander Richards completed his post-JO tour at OPNAV N97 as the liaison to Commander Submarine Forces Atlantic. During this tour he earned his Master of Business Administration from the George Washington University. He completed a follow on tour as the Submarine Sonar and Fire Control Testing Project Manager at Operational Test and Evaluation Command in Norfolk. From 2013 to 2017, he served as the Operations Department Head at Navy Recruiting District Pittsburgh. From 2017 to 2019, CDR Richards was the Officer in Charge of the Naval Support Activity in Gaeta Italy. Most recently, he was in the Commander’s Action Group (CAG) to French General Philippe Lavigne, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation in Norfolk, VA.
Commander Richards’ personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal as well as multiple unit and service awards. He is married to Lauren and they have two children. In his free time, he enjoys running with his dog and coaching soccer.
