Commander Kris Klaiber, a Columbus, Ohio native, is a 2001 graduate of Franklin University with a Bachelor of Science degree in management information systems. He attended officer candidate school, in Pensacola, Florida receiving his commission in February 2002. He earned his Naval flight officer wings of Gold in December 2003 and completed initial training in the E-2C Hawkeye in June 2004.

Beginning in July 2004, Cmdr. Klaiber embarked on four consecutive operational tours where he deployed and flew more than 2,200 hours in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, New Dswn, and numerous other contingencies, and joint and multi-national exercises. He was nominated as hawkeye NFO of the Year in 2006 and earned qualifications as a Level IV mission commander, strike lead, and command duty officer (Underway). Commander Klaiber has held leadership positions in training, operations and maintenance, including taking charge of more than 150 Sailors in the largest maintenance division in the hawkeye community.

Following his department head tour, Klaiber reported to the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island where he graduated with distinction, earning a Master of Arts degree in national security and strategic studies. In March 2016, Cmdr. Klaiber reported to U.S. Southern Command in Miami, Florida for joint duty. During this tour, he was selected for command and graduated from the Joint Forces Staff College to complete his joint officer qualification. In June 2018, Commander Klaiber reported to Navy Talent Acquisition Group Richmond as executive officer and assumed command in August 2019.

Klaiber’s decorations and awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (First Strike/Flight Award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and numerous unit and campaign awards.
