Commander McCurry began his naval career in 1994 as a fire controlman. His first sea tour was as part of the plankowner crew onboard USS Milius (DDG 69), which conducted sea-trials, post-shakedown availability (PSA) and commissioning in 1996, as well as a middle-east deployment and support of Operation Infinite Reach. In 1998, he was selected for the Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST) program, which enabled him to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in international relations from the University of Southern California (USC) and commission as a surface warfare officer in 2003.

At sea, he served onboard USS Boxer (LHD 4) in San Diego, CA as the main propulsion (Aft) division officer, assistant DCA/ER09 division officer and 1st/3rd division officer, completing two deployments to the Seventh and Fifth Fleet AORs in support of operation Iraqi Freedom and international exercise Talisman Sabre; chief engineer onboard USS Shoup (DDG 86), completing a dry-docking planned maintenance availability and deployment work ups; 1st Lieutenant onboard USS Essex (LHD 2), completing an extended dry-docking planned maintenance availability. Terminating shore duty a year early, he returned to sea as the auxiliaries officer onboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), completing refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) sea trials, pre-deployment work-ups and INSURV; and executive officer of USS Anchorage (LPD 23), completing a deployment to the Middle East and Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) operations.

Lt. Cmdr. McCurry’s shore tours include duty under instruction at Duke University where he earned a Master of Business Administration degree, instructor of seamanship and navigation at the US Naval Academy, and battle damage repair officer for MSC Far East / OIC of MSC Ship Support Unit Singapore.

McCurry reported in July 2020 as executive officer of Navy Talent Acquisition Group Pittsburgh, where he currently serves.
