Command Master Chief James Crupi is a native of Mesa, Arizona and graduated from Highland High School in 1996. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy July 1996 and attended recruit training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, IL. After RTC Great Lakes, he attended radioman “A” school and graduated in 1997.

In February 1997, he reported to his first duty station in La Maddalena, Italy for assignment to USS Simon Lake (AS-33). During his tour with AS-33 he advanced to third class petty officer, earned the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist qualification and deployed throughout Europe and the Persian Gulf.

After detaching AS-33, he reported to USS Vicksburg (CG-69) in 1999. During this tour he advanced to second class petty officer and deployed in support of BALTOPS, UNITAS and cooperative engagement capability operational testing.

In July 2001, he reported to the Joint Communications Support Element (JCSE), “the voice heard around the world”, where he completed the U.S. Army basic airborne course and advanced to first class petty officer. During this tour he deployed in support of Joint Special Operations forces taking part in Operation(s) Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom to Afghanistan, Iraq, Qatar and Yemen.

After detaching JCSE he reported to a CNO priority one command tasked with executing classified presidentially directed missions. During the tour he advanced to chief petty officer.

In October 2005, he reported to United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), Offutt AFB Nebraska, where he was assigned to the Joint Functional Component Command for Global Strike and Integration (JFCC-GSI) as the senior non-commissioned officer in charge of the target production cell.

Upon completing his tour at USSTRATCOM, he reported to the MARITIME EXPEDITIONARY SECURITY SQUADRON(s) FOUR and SIX in 2008. During this tour he advanced to senior chief petty officer, qualified Expeditionary Warfare Specialist and deployed to Kuwait and Rota Spain.

In November 2011, he reported for duty as an individual augmentee (IA) assigned to the JOINT TASK FORCE - HORN OF AFRICA (JTF-HOA) in Djibouti, Africa as the J6 senior enlisted advisor. During this tour he qualified Enlisted Information Warfare Specialist and detached to various countries throughout Africa.

Upon completion of his IA tour, he reported to NAVAL NETWORK WARFARE COMMAND in 2013 as the space operation LCPO and was subsequently advanced to master chief petty officer. During this tour he was selected for the command master chief program.

In March 2015, he reported to the Navy Leadership and Ethics Center in Newport Rhode Island where completed the command master chief course and was subsequently assigned to STRIKE FIGHTER SQUADRON THREE SEVEN. During this tour he qualified Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist and deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve onboard the USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77).

Upon completion of his tour at the Bulls, he reported to Navy Recruiting District Phoenix where he currently serves as the command master chief.

Master Chief Crupi’s decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (second award), Joint Service Commendation Medal (third award), Navy Commendation Medal (second award), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (fifth award), and various unit awards, campaign and service decorations.


Master Chief Crupi holds a Bachelor’s Degree in counter-intelligence operations, a level 5 certification in homeland security and is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy and command master chief course.
