Commander John Culpepper is a native of Raymond, Mississippi and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2002 with a degree in history and received a Master’s Degree in military operational art and science from the Air Force Command and Staff College in 2014.

 

His first sea duty assignment was onboard USS Stump (DD 978) out of Norfolk, VA as the damage control assistant where he deployed to South America. His second division officer tour was as the auxiliaries officer on USS Vandegrift (FFG 48) forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan. As a department head he was the chief engineer on USS Stethem (DDG 63), USS Cowpens (CG 63), and USS Antietam (CG 54) all stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. From October 2017 to April 2019 he was the executive officer for USS Chafee (DDG 90) in Pearl Harbor, HI.
                 
Ashore, he served as a Naval science instructor at Officer Training Command Newport and deployed with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions to Afghanistan as a civil affairs officer, the operations officer for PCRON ONE in Bahrain, the readiness officer for the division of professional development at the United States Naval Academy and the amphibious doctrine and tactics development branch head at Surface and Mine Warfare Development Center in Little Creek VA. He is currently serving as the executive officer for Navy Talent Acquisition Group Nashville.

 

His personal decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (8 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (2 awards), and various service and campaign awards.
