Commander Erick Kearns is a native of Sacramento California, and was commissioned through officer candidate school in 2002 after graduating from the California Maritime Academy with Bachelors of Science in mechanical engineering. He also holds a Master’s Degree in applied physics from the Naval post graduate school.


Cmdr. Kearns assumed his duties as executive officer of Afloat Training Group Norfolk in May 2019. In his most recent assignment, he was the auxiliaries officer aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75).


His first sea tour was aboard USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) as the gunnery and ordnance officer. He next served aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) as a machinery division officer for his second deployment to the Fifth Fleet.


Commander Kearns’ initial department head tour was as the Operations Officer aboard USS James E. Williams (DDG 95). Subsequently, he served as the chemistry radiological controls assistant aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), deploying to the Persian Gulf.


Ashore, Cmdr. Kearns served as the Eisenhower maintenance coordinator and port engineer on the staff of the Commander, U.S. Naval Air Forces, Atlantic in the engineering & maintenance directorate.


His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), and various service campaign and unit decorations.
