Commander Dan Oakey graduated from the University of Florida in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in economics and commissioned through the NROTC program. He then reported to flight school in Pensacola FL, earning his wings as a helicopter pilot.

He qualified in the SH-60F and HH-60H and was assigned to the HS-15 “Red Lions” at NAS Jacksonville, FL. He deployed aboard USS John F Kennedy (CV 67) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and with the 2515th Air Ambulance Detachment flying medevac missions in Kuwait and Southern Iraq. In 2009 he was assigned to USS George H W Bush (CVN 77) in Norfolk, VA for his disassociated sea tour as aircraft launch and recovery officer. He then joined the HSC-22 “Sea Knights” flying the MH-60S. He deployed as officer in charge of the vertical replenishment detachment aboard USNS Supply (T-AOE 6) and served as squadron maintenance and operations officer.

Commander Oakey’s shore assignments were with the HT-8 “Eightballers” as an instructor pilot at NAS Whiting Field, FL; the Naval War College in Newport, RI where he earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies; and on the staff of United States Central Command in Tampa, FL.
