Master Chief Petty Officer Deshawn Carter, a native of Chicago, Ill., was born in 1977. He enlisted in the United States Navy in October 1996, and attended Recruit Basic Training in Great Lakes, Ill. After basic training, he attended seaman apprentice training.

His first duty station was USS Tortuga (LSD 46), homeported in Norfolk, VA. During this tour, he was promoted to gunners mate second class petty officer.

His sea assignments have included USS Tortuga (LSD 46), USS Grasp (ARS 51), PRECOM Expeditionary Unit MSRON FOUR, where he was advanced to chief petty officer, and assignment to USS Mustin (DDG 89), where he was selected to senior chief petty officer, master chief petty officer, and eventually, command master chief.

In 2017, Master Chief Carter checked on board NTAG Great Lakes as the command master chief.

He graduated from Columbia College of Missouri with an associate degree in general studies in 2011 and the Senior Enlisted Academy class 207 (Gold) in 2017.

Master Chief Carter’s awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (six awards), Army Achievement Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and various Navy Unit Commendations.
