Commander Whittington, a native of St. Augustine, Florida, earned a commission in 2001 from the U.S. Naval Academy. Following his commissioning, he reported to NAS Pensacola and completed primary flight training at NAS Whiting Field. He subsequently reported to NAS Meridian where he trained in the T-2C Buckeye and T-45 Goshawk, earning his wings of gold in 2003.

 

In 2004, Commander Whittington qualified in the S-3B Viking with VS-41 at NAS North Island. He then reported to the Maulers of VS-32 at NAS Jacksonville. He deployed with the Maulers in 2006 and in 2007, flying on board USS Enterprise (CVN 65) in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM, which included flying combat surveillance missions over the skies of southern Iraq.

 

In 2008, following his tour with the Maulers, Commander Whittington reported to the Fleet Replacement Squadron of VFA-106 and completed a transition to the F/A-18E Super Hornet. He was then assigned to the Pukin’ Dogs of VFA-143 at NAS Oceana, deploying on board USS Eisenhower in 2009 and again in 2010, completing more than 80 combat missions over Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

 

Following his transition tour, Commander Whittington reported for his department head tour with the Valions of VFA-15 flying the F/A-18C Hornet. In 2014, he deployed on board USS George H.W. Bush, where he again flew over Afghanistan, and where he helped lead the fight against ISIL in Iraq through the opening weeks of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.

 

From 2014 to 2015, Commander Whittington attended the U.S. Naval War College, earning a masters degree in national security and strategic studies. He was then assigned to the NATO staff at Allied Headquarters Maritime Command, Northwood, UK where he served in the Current Operations branch of Maritime Air NATO.

 

Commander Whittington has amassed over 2,900 flight hours and more than 600 arrested landings. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal Strike Flight Award (five awards), Navy Commendation Medal and Navy Achievement Medal (four awards).
