Commander Matt Byrne, a native of Columbia, MO, graduated from the University of Kansas in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and received a direct commission as an ensign. Following the completion of officer indoctrination school, he reported to nuclear power school in September 1997 in Orlando, FL, later moving with the command to Charleston, SC.  While at nuclear power school, he taught multiple subjects to both enlisted and officer students, and ended his tour as the assistant director, officer department. 
In May 2002, he transferred to Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, IL, where he served as a ship’s officer, public affairs officer, and management services officer. He next served as officer programs officer at Navy Recruiting District Chicago from 2005 to 2007. 
In 2007, he was promoted to lieutenant commander and transferred to Everett, WA to serve as the training officer onboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72), where he completed a full training cycle and a combat deployment to the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean in support of operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM. 
After a year of joint professional military education at the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS, Commander Byrne assumed command of the Indianapolis Military Entrance Processing Station in July 2010. During this tour, the station won its first “MEPS of Excellence” award in more than 7 years.  In 2013 he transferred to the Office of Naval Intelligence in Suitland, MD, as the executive officer of the ONI Staff.
Commander Byrne wears the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (2 awards), and various unit and service awards.  He holds a Masters in Business Administration from DePaul University and is certified as a senior professional in human resources (SPHR).
