Commander Nicholas Gamiz is a native of Albuquerque, N.M. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, W.A. He subsequently earned his Wings of Gold in 2002 after graduating from advanced flight training in Corpus Christi, Texas. Upon completion of training at the fleet replacement squadron for the P-3C Orion aircraft, he was assigned to his first operational squadron, VP-26, in Brunswick, Maine.

While stationed at VP-26, Cmdr. Gamiz deployed three times in support of operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Noble Eagle.  In 2006, Gamiz was selected to be an instructor at the Fleet Replacement Squadron 30 in Jacksonville, Florida There he instructed the newest winged naval aviators in contact and tactical flying. He was also in charge of the development and implementation of the Tactical Operational Readiness Trainer (TORT), which brought the latest technology of tactical simulation training to the fleet.

In 2008, Commander Gamiz was accepted for a transition to the VR full time support community and received orders to VR-57 in San Diego, California. As a qualified C-40A transport aircraft commander and NATOPS instructor pilot, he flew world-wide missions in support of combatant commanders. During this time, he also earned his Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Phase I qualification from the Naval War College.

In 2011, Cmdr. Gamiz was flag screened for orders to VR-1 at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. He quickly qualified as a C-37B (Gulfstream 550) transport aircraft commander and lead NATOPS instructor pilot. Gamiz deployed twice in support of Commander, International Security Assistance Force (COMISAF), Afghanistan. He completed his tour as operations officer, orchestrating and executing mission requirements for senior Naval leadership including the Secretary of the Navy, Chief of Naval Operations, and Commandant of the Marine Corps.

During 2014, Commander Gamiz served on the OPNAV N1 staff as the aviation manpower requirements officer. In December of 2014, he was selected and served for two years as the director, SECNAV Congressional Liaison/White House Liaison Office.

Cmdr. Gamiz earned his JPME II qualification and Master of National Strategy and Policy degree in 2017 while in residence at the National War College in Washington, D.C. He additionally has a Master of Business Administration degree from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
 
CDR Gamiz has flown over 3,000 military flight hours. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), the Army Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, and various other service and campaign ribbons and medals.
