Commander William Michael Beaty, a native of Orange Park, FL, graduated from the University of Florida in 1998 earning a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. Part of a cooperative program, he also received a Bachelor of Arts in liberal sciences from Lenoir-Rhyne College located in Hickory, NC. He commissioned through officer candidate school in December 1998 and was designated a Naval aviator in February 2001.
An F/A-18C Hornet pilot, Beaty’s sea tours include three deployments, all aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75). He served the first two with Strike-Fighter Squadron One Zero Five (VFA-105) in support of operation IRAQI FREEDOM (2002-2005), and was awarded three “Top Hook” awards for carrier landing performance. He deployed again with Strike-Fighter Squadron Thirty-Seven (VFA-37) in support of operations ENDURING FREEDOM, NEW DAWN and the global war on terrorism (2009-2012). With VFA-37, Beaty led the safety, maintenance and operations departments. VFA-105 and VFA-37 respectively earned the Battle Excellence and Estocin Awards for recognition as top hornet squadrons.
Ashore, he joined VMFAT-101 at MCAS Miramar as an F/A-18C instructor (2005-2007). He taught all phases of strike-fighter operations but specialized in carrier landing instruction. Additionally, he earned a Master of Arts degree in national security and strategic studies from the Naval War College (2008) and served twice at U.S. Central Command (2008, 2012-2015). In this capacity, he served as maritime officer to the joint operations center, executive assistant to the operations directorate, and as Air/ISR operations officer during operations RESOLUTE SUPPORT and INHERENT RESOLVE.
