Commander Hoegel grew up in Hauppauge, NY. He graduated from Cornell University in 1997, earning his commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship program.


A surface warfare officer, Cmdr. Hoegel’s first sea tour was aboard USS Saipan (LHA 2), where he served as main propulsion division officer from 1997 to 1999. During that tour he deployed to the Mediterranean Sea supporting NATO operations in Kosovo. From 2000 to 2001, he served as assistant operations officer in USS Cowpens (CG 63), making two Seventh Fleet deployments.


Ashore, Hoegel served as a combat systems instructor at Surface Warfare Officers School from 2001 to 2002. He was subsequently selected as flag aide to President, Naval War College, where he served from 2002 to 2004.


After completing department head school, Commander Hoegel served as pre-commissioning Operations Officer in USS New Orleans (LPD 18) from 2004 to 2007. He then served as Operations Officer in USS Antietam (CG 54) from 2008 to 2009. During this period, Antietam won the 2008 Battle Efficiency Award and conducted a Seventh Fleet deployment serving as air defense commander for Carrier Strike Group THREE. Cmdr. Hoegel next served as the first flag secretary to Commander, Carrier Strike Group ONE, where he stood up the Navy’s first new carrier strike group in more than two decades and supported initial Haiti earthquake relief efforts as part of Operation Unified Response. His most recent sea assignment was executive officer in USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108), completing a Seventh and Fifth Fleet deployment in 2012.


Following four consecutive sea tours, Hoegel earned a Master of Arts Degree in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College in 2013. He then served three years in the Office of the Secretary of Defense as deputy director of the office of family readiness policy, overseeing a broad portfolio of programs and policies designed to help Service members and their families manage the challenges of daily living experienced in the unique context of military service.


Commander Hoegel reported to Navy Recruiting District Pittsburgh in June 2016 as Executive Officer and assumed command in September 2017.
