Cmdr. Stephen C Karpi, Jr was born in Hackensack, N.J., and graduated from Apache Junction High School in Apache Junction, Ariz., in 1988. He enlisted in the Navy and began his career with basic recruit training at RTC Great Lakes, Ill., followed by operations specialist “A” school in Dam Neck, Va.
His first tour of duty was aboard USS Valley Forge (CG 50) from March 1989 to June 1990. While on board Valley Forge, he was selected for the BOOST commissioning program. Upon completion of the program, he attended the University of Arizona. He graduated with a degree in nuclear engineering and received his commission in December 1995.
His first officer assignment was on USS L. Mendel Rivers (SSN 686) in Norfolk, Va., where he served as the RCA, CRA and the communications officer. Cmdr. Karpi completed two Mediterranean deployments and qualified engineer. He then transferred to the naval postgraduate school in Monterey, Calif., where he received his Master’s Degree in engineering acoustics and completed joint professional military education requirements (August 2000 to December 2002).
Cmdr. Karpi served as the navigator on board USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23) from June 2003 to November 2005. As a proud plank owner, he was involved with the crew certification, sea trials and commissioning.
He was assigned as the operations officer at the defense liaison division, working in the Pentagon from 2006 to 2008. Karpi served as the executive officer of PCU Missouri (SSN 780) from March to September 2008.
After completion of the submarine command course in May 2009, Cmdr. Karpi served as the executive officer in USS Springfield (SSN 761), completing his tour in January 2011. He served as the advanced training and readiness department head and executive officer at NAVSUBSCOL from February 2011 to April 2014. His current assignment is the executive officer of NRD Phoenix.
Cmdr. Karpi's personal awards include two Meritorious Service Medals, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals and two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.
