Commander Thompson hails from Twin City, GA. He is a 1999 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. Following graduation, he conducted flight training in Pensacola, FL, Corpus Christi, TX, and Meridian, MS. He was designated a Naval aviator in December 2001. After earning his “Wings of Gold” he reported to VAQ-129 at NAS Whidbey Island, WA. for training in the E/A-6B Prowler.
In May 2003, Cmdr. Thompson reported to the “Cougars” of VAQ-139 at NAS Whidbey Island. While assigned to the “Cougars,” Thompson completed two deployments embarked on USS John C Stennis (CVN 74) and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) in support of operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
In August 2006, Commander Thompson transferred to the “Vikings” of VAQ-129 at NAS Whidbey Island, WA where he served as an instructor pilot, landing signals officer, and carrier qualification phase head. While at VAQ-129, CDR Thompson was named the 2009 E/A-6B instructor pilot of the year.
In December 2009, Cmdr. Thompson reported to the “Garudas” of VAQ-134 for his department head tour. He served as the administrative officer, the safety officer, the operations officer, and the maintenance officer. While with the "Garudas," he completed two deployments onboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) in support of operations NEW DAWN and ENDURING FREEDOM.
Following his department head tour, Thompson attended the Naval War College in Newport, RI where he earned a Master of Arts degree in national security and strategic studies. While there, he was designated a Naval operational planner after graduating from the Maritime Advanced Warfare School.
In September 2013, Commander Thompson reported to the Navy's SEVENTH Fleet, home ported in Yokosuka, Japan, where he served as the N-52 pacific plans branch chief. While attached to SEVENTH Fleet, Cmdr. Thompson completed two deployments on the USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19).

Following Navy Recruiting Orientation, Thompson reported to NRD Philadelphia as executive officer in April 2016.
Commander Thompson's personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal Strike/Flight Award (four awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), and numerous unit awards and citations.  Cmdr. Thompson has accumulated over 2,800 flight hours and 450 carrier arrested landings.
