Commander Acker hails from Kennesaw, Georgia, and entered the United States Naval Academy in June 1995. After serving a two year full-time mission to the Dominican Republic for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he returned to the Naval Academy and graduated with the class of 2001 earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in political science. Cmdr. Acker was winged a naval aviator in Corpus Christi, Texas in December 2002, completing flight school with distinction on the Commodore’s List.

After completing P-3C Fleet Replacement training, he joined the War Eagles of Patrol Squadron SIXTEEN in Jacksonville, Florida. He completed two multi-site deployments to U.S. FIFTH and SIXTH Fleet areas of responsibility in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom and led his combat aircrew on multiple exercise and operational detachments to Cape Verde, Bahrain, Djibouti, Iceland, and France. His duties included educational services officer, ground safety officer, aviation technician branch officer, flight division officer, and pilot training officer.

In March 2007, Commander Acker was assigned to Commander SECOND Fleet in Norfolk, Virginia as air planner for N3/5, operations and plans directorate. There he qualified as battle watch captain and was the lead air planner for multiple training, readiness, and joint task force exercises with U.S. and Canadian forces. He was selected as the senior active duty military liaison on detachment to the Dominican Republic for PANAMAX 08.

In 2009, Cmdr. Acker reported to USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) in Norfolk, Virginia and qualified as a catapult and arresting gear officer (Shooter), alongside conning officer, and command duty officer (Underway). He served as the V2 division officer and top cat while completing a deployment to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In 2012, he was assigned to the Tridents of Patrol Squadron TWO SIX in Jacksonville, Florida. During his department head tour he served as administrative officer, future operations officer, Commander Task Group 72 operations officer, training officer, and squadron operations officer. Commander Acker deployed to the U.S. SEVENTH Fleet area of responsibility and led detachments to Guam and Australia.

In January 2015, Cmdr. Acker reported to Washington, DC for joint operations duty as a military advisor to the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation. As part of the interdiction team, he led interagency efforts to advance the 105-nation Proliferation Security Initiative and to prevent the spread of WMD, missiles for WMD delivery, and advanced conventional weapons through bilateral and multilateral diplomacy.

He became the executive officer of Navy Recruiting District Nashville in December 2017.

His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various campaign, service, and unit awards.
