Commander James Darkenwald, a native of Elk River, Minnesota, is a 2000 graduate of the University of Minnesota. Earning a bachelor of science degree, he was commissioned as an ensign through the NROTC program.

Sea assignments include damage control assistant in USS Nicholas (FFG 47); and information systems security manager in USS George Washington(CVN 73). 

 

He laterally converted from surface warfare to human resources in 2004. His first human resources tour was served as the deputy director of manpower & personnel (N1) and military manpower analyst at Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) in Great Lakes, IL. His subsequent tour was also in Illinois as the director of officer programs department at Navy Recruiting District Chicago.

In 2010, he was assigned to OPNAV N132 as the lead Navy enlisted accessions planner. Following his tour in Washington, D.C., he transferred to U.S. European Command as the lead naval strength planner and subsequently led the J1 Director’s Action Group (DAG). He was one of the eight founding members of the EUCOM Rapid Innovation Cell (ERIC).

Cmdr. Darkenwald holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Illinois - Champaign Urbana. Additional education includes a professional human resources certification through the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Phase I through the Marine Corps University’s Command and Staff College, and JPME Phase II through the Joint Forces Staff College.

Personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal with one gold star and various Service and Unit Commendations.
