Commander Pete Kelleher enlisted in the United States Navy at the San Diego Military Entrance Processing Station in February 1998. He completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL and Navy Nuclear Power School in Charleston, SC. Cmdr Kelleher was selected for Officer Candidate School and received his commission in December 1999. Upon graduation, he attended Surface Warfare Officer School, Division Officer Course in Newport, R.I. He then reported to the USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) where he served as the communications officer.

Kelleher laterally transferred into the human resource community in December of 2003. His first human resource community assignment was at Navy Recruiting District Seattle in December 2004. After completing that tour, he reported to Navy Region Southwest in June 2008, where he served as the individual augmentee coordinator and officer support officer.  Upon completion of his tour he reported to NATO Training Mission Afghanistan. There he served as the personnel statistics officer and advisor to the Afghan National Police. Upon completion of his tour in Kabul in May 2012, he reported to Personnel Support Detachment, North Island to serve as the Officer-in-Charge. From July 2014 to January 2017, he served on the Joint Staff, J-1, personnel readiness division. 

Commander Kelleher's professional military education includes Navy Nuclear Power School, Officer Candidate School, Surface Warfare Officer School Division Officer Course, Joint Professional Military Education Phase I from the Air University Air Command and Staff College, and Joint Professional Military Education Phase II course at the Joint and Combined Warfighting School, Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA. He has also earned a Master of Business Administration Degree from Seattle University, is a certified senior professional in human resources from the Society of Human Resources Management, and is a joint qualified officer.
 
Commander Kelleher’s military awards and decorations include two Joint Service Commendation Medal, five Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and various unit and service medals and ribbons.
