A native of Stockton, California Cmdr. Steven Rodriguez enlisted as an aviation anti-submarine warfare operator and attended basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, FL., in 1987. After completing Naval aircrewman candidate school in Pensacola, FL. and aviation anti-submarine warfare operator “A” school in Millington, TN, Airman Rodriguez reported to the VP-91 Stingers as an aviation anti-submarine warfare operator (AW).


While assigned to VP-91, he was selected for the Navy’s Broadened Opportunity for Officer Selection and Training (BOOST), graduated from Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, FL with a Bachelor of Science in philosophy, and was commissioned and reported to Boise Military Operations Entrance Processing Station, Boise, ID. as the operations officer.


Leaving the Navy in 1998, he later joined the Naval reserve and was assigned to the Operational Support Unit at Navy Operational Support Center Helena, Montana in 2002 following the events of September 11th 2001. While assigned to the Navy Operational Support Center Helena, MT he mobilized and deployed with Naval Coastal Warfare Squadron 33 in support of operation IRAQI FREEDOM in 2005 and upon his return in 2006 returned to active service as a full-time support human resource officer, and was selected for command of the Navy Operational Support Center Helena, MT.


In 2008, Lt. Cmdr. Steven Rodriguez deployed for a second combat tour to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, serving as the executive officer for an embedded training team responsible for training the Afghan National Army’s 3/205th and 1/207th combat brigades while attached to Forward Operating Base Tombstone in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.


Upon his return in 2009, Lt. Cmdr. Rodriguez was again selected for command, serving as the commanding officer of the Lansing Military Entrance Processing Station, Lansing, MI. During this time, he earned a Master’s degree in human services with emphasis in marriage and family from Liberty University and completed his Professional Human Resources (PHR) certification.


Upon completion of his second command tour, Lt. Cmdr. Rodriguez reported to Navy Personnel Command as the Branch Head for PERS-911 Reserve Personnel Management and the Reserve Component Joint Officer Manager. During his tour, he was promoted to his current rank of Commander and screened once again for command.


In April 2015, Cmdr. Rodriguez volunteered to fill an Individual Augmentee assignment supporting Navy Special Warfare Group ONE and deployed for a third combat tour to Baghdad, Iraq. Serving both as the J-1 and the Protocol Officer, he was instrumental in standing up the first Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force Iraq.

 

Upon returning from Iraq, Cmdr. Rodriguez reported to Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Houston where he assumed the duties of executive officer in June 2016 and subsequently took command of NRD Houston in June 2017.


Cmdr. Rodriguez’s personal awards include:  Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal.
