Master Chief Gage was born and raised in St. Louis, where he graduated from Pattonville High School in 1988. Shortly after graduation, he entered the Navy and reported for basic training in Great Lakes, Ill.
As an undesignated airman, Gage’s first assignment was with Airborne Early Warning Squadron One Two Six (VAW-126) where he struck aviation administrationman, qualified as plane captain for the E-2C Hawkeye aircraft and rose to the rank of petty officer second class. While attached to VAW-126, then Petty Officer Gage accomplished multiple deployments to include the Persian Gulf aboard the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) and he participated in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm while assigned to Carrier Air Group Seventeen.


In 1992, Gage led the production control aviation support equipment division for Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department (AIMD) at Master Jet Base, Cecil Field, Fla. In 1996, he reported to the “Black Stallions” of Helicopter Combat Support Squadron (HC) 4, Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella, Italy, where he earned the rank of petty officer first class, served as the unit’s leading petty officer and qualified as enlisted aviation warfare specialist.


Serving as the administrative officer for more than 800 personnel at AIMD NAS Jacksonville, Petty Officer First Class Gage later served as production control supervisor and earned chief petty officer anchors in 2001.


In 2002, Chief Gage transferred to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Fifteen (HS-15) at NAS Jacksonville where he immediately deployed to the Mediterranean, Adriatic Ocean and Persian Gulf aboard the USS George Washington (CVN 73).The crew engaged in operations against Iraqi Forces in the Southern No-Fly Zone of Iraq. Chief Gage mastered the skills needed to certify and release aircraft “Safe for Fight” and earned his Surface Warfare Specialist designation.
