• Today's Force Roles - The enduring characteristics of the submarine - stealth, endurance, firepower and mobility - enable the U.S. Navy Submarine force to support the following missions:

  • Peacetime Engagement
    • Supporting the U.S. agenda of flexible forward presence through deployments, exercises and operations, port visits, and military-to-military relations
    • Operating in conjunction with aircraft carrier battlegroups
  • Surveillance / Intelligence / Reconnaissance
    • Transmitting real-time information to avert or mitigate conflicts, as well as collecting intelligence of long-term value
    • Acting as the unseen eyes and ears of the the U.S. as well as operating with relative impunity in waters outside U.S. control
  • Special Operations
    • Delivering small groups of forces (SEALs) clandestinely when surprise or secrecy is essential
    • Collecting tactical intelligence for forces ashore
    • Reconnoitering in coastal areas in advance of amphibious operations
  • Sea Denial
    • Interdicting surface and submarine forces as well as merchant shipping
  • Deterrence
    • Continuing the peacetime role of deterrence through covert patrol

• Force of the Future - The Navy's multi-mission submarines - SSNs and SSBNs - are key elements to a balanced naval force. They are critical tools at the Nation's disposal to protect American interests, friends and allies. They contribute significantly to our Nation's ability to preserve political commitments, ensure regional stability, deter conflict and defeat adversaries in the ever changing new world order.

  The U.S. Navy Submarine Force is committed to broadening as well as enhancing its multi-mission role into the 21st century. To meet this commitment, the force of the future is centered upon several initiatives:
