Commander Ian M. B. Lopez is a native of Aurora, Illinois and a 2005 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy where he received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.  He also received Masters of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterrey, California.

His sea tours include Engineering, Navigation and Electronics Technician Division Officer as well as Fire Control Officer (FCO) onboard USS WASP (LHD-1) where he supported PANAMEX and Humanitarian efforts following Hurricane Felix in the SOUTHCOM Area of Responsibility (AOR).  Following tasking in SOUTHCOM AOR, he deployed with USS WASP (LHD-1) to the CENTCOM AOR to deliver the first operational MV-22 squadron.  In February 2009, he reported as a Tactical Action Officer to USS ENTERPRISE. 

Returning to sea duty in October 2013, he reported as the Operations Officer to USS GUNSTON HALL (LSD-44), where he deployed as part of the BATAAN ARG to the CENTCOM Area of Responsibility.  In January 2015, he reported as the Operations Officer (N3) to Amphibious Squadron THREE, where he deployed as part of ESSEX ARG to PACOM, EUCOM, and CENTCOM Areas of Responsibility in support of Operations JUKEBOX KINDLE and INHERENT RESOLVE, among others.

Ashore, he reported to U.S. Fleet Forces Command in October 2010 as Assistant Battle Watch Captain, Crisis Action Task Watch Officer and Action Officer for Current Operations.  During that tour, he volunteered as the J3 Maritime Planner Individual Augmentee to Joint Special Operation Command.   In September 2016, he reported to Navy Personnel Command as Placement Officer for Out-service Graduate Education and Special Fellowships.  He was selected for transition Human Resources Community in July 2017.  In March 2018, he reported as the Deputy Executive Assistant to Commander, Navy Personnel Command.  In February 2020, he reported to Navy Recruiting Command as the Deputy Director, Manpower and Human Resources (N1) and Director, Manning and Administrative Support Division.  On 1 October 2021, he assumed the duties and responsibilities of Executive Officer, Navy Talent Acquisition Group Carolina.
 
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards) and various other campaign and unit awards.
